Last summer, while thinking up material for a concert, we decided to include arrangements of some of our favorite pop songs and co-mingle them with jazz standards. After the concert that evening, quite a few people suggested (and some demanded) we record those songs together.

Jazz is deeply associated with standards of The Great American Songbook, and this made us think: What happens to the songs that are not part of the songbook? Should they belong in jazz? We believe, that at its core, jazz is inclusive and allows us to express ourselves through improvisation. So, we decided to record music we love and feel is worth exploring, regardless of origin, or public perception.

Standards, Not Standards is a collection of these songs coexisting under the common thread of La Lucha. We hope you have as much fun listening to this music as we do playing it.

Laugh, dance, sing, cry, knit a sweater…enjoy!
